CBD. THC. Hemp. Marijuana. Is it legal? Is it healthy? Why would I need this? Will I start listening to Phish?
Despite its controversial origins, cannabadiol, or CBD for short, is being tested, explored and used all over the world to treat everything from minor aches and pains to radical diseases. From herbalists to western doctors, people are finding new uses for CBD and its related compounds daily. Research is just scratching the surface of what is possible.
Despite what my mom may think, CBD does not come from a devil plant. It comes from hemp, which is a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis. Hemp has been cultivated for thousands of years and is used in countless industrial and medical applications. It is used to make clothing, plastic, rope, paper, oil, and the most exciting to us, supplemental cannabadiol.
CBD is one of over 85 cannabinoids that appears in hemp and marijuana. It is particularly plentiful in hemp, but only in trace amounts in marijuana. In general, if there is THC, then there is little to no CBD. Inversely, if you have a lot of CBD, you usually only have a trace amount of THC, though some strains of marijuana are being cultivated to have adequate amounts of both (particularly for treating cancer). An interesting side note for people who do want to get “high”, CBD actually diminishes the psychoactive effects of THC. It’s a fascinating yin and yang relationship.
City & Sea Trading CBD hemp oil is made with industrial hemp, has no psychoactive effects, and will not cause you to grow dreadlocks. In short, it is as safe and legal as a cup of peppermint herbal tea, but in our opinion, with far more benefits. There have been no reported negative side effects from CBD except possibly a sedative effect if taken in large quantities.
What is CBD hemp oil used for?
Our body has an entire endocannabanoid system embedded in the cell membranes throughout our body, but particularly in our central nervous system. This endocannabanoid system regulates such things as pain sensation, mood, appetite and memory. As we age we become less efficient at making our own cannabanoids. Using a CBD supplement can stimulate the production of CB receptors and the production of endogenous CBD. In addition to CBD, there are also many other compounds in the full spectrum hemp oil extracts that have various health benefits that are being studied more and more by the day. It is a new field with lots of exciting possibilities.
Here is an excerpt from The National Cancer institute website, a federal government agency: ( https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/patient/cannabis-pdq#section/all )
Cannabinoids are active chemicals in Cannabis that cause drug-like effects throughout the body, including the central nervous system and the immune system. They are also known as phytocannabinoids. The main active cannabinoid in Cannabis is delta-9-THC. Another active cannabinoid is cannabidiol (CBD), which may relieve pain and lower inflammation without causing the "high" of delta-9-THC.
Other possible effects of cannabinoids include:
- Preventing the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors.
- Relieving muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis.
What is special about City & Sea CBD hemp oils?
Our product is unique from just about any other CBD product we have found. The hemp industry is largely unregulated. It’s basically like the wild west out there with companies mislabeling marijuana extracts as CBD extracts and using unstable oils like hemp seed and olive oil that oxidize and become rancid. Recently the FDA issued warnings to several CBD manufacturers. Lab tests showed that many of them had no CBD in their CBD products at all. (http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm435591.htm )
From most of the products we have seen there is little to no information on how it’s extracted and what oils or fats are used to extract. Some of them are just sugar bombs that may as well be junk food with ambiguous CBD content claims.
We come from the world of raw organic food and aim to preserve the nutritional value of the food we eat by cooking and processing as little as possible. This is our approach to CBD. We acquire our unprocessed pesticide free hemp from European biodynamic farms. We use shelf stable organic coconut oil and decarboxylate the hemp at low temperatures, which gives us CBD, but also preserves the CBDA, the precursor to CBD, and all the rest of the terpenes, cannabinoids, and other phytochemicals. We believe by our own experience and the testimonies of our friends and clients that our full spectrum blends get the job done as well or better than just isolated CBD alone. That said, just to make sure you get what you need, we added organic CO2 extracted CBD isolate into our full spectrum extract along with other synergistic herbs.
What is the recommended serving size of our CBD tinctures?
The fact is, there are no established CBD numbers for dosage, and numerous studies show that 2 mg of CBD can be just as effective as double and triple digit CBD. Each dropper has an approximate 5 mg of CBD. We recommend 1/2 dropper full twice a day to start. If you are suffering from chronic issues, and not getting fairly quick results, up the dosage to 2 or 3 half droppers twice a day. Once you get some results lower the dosage to 1 or 2 droppers, once or twice a day.
Are there any negative side effects?
None that we have experienced or read about, but we take a conservative approach. We do not megadose because more doesn’t necessarily mean better. CBD actually has a biphasic effect. A little goes a long way, while too much can work against you. For example, if you are suffering from ocular hypertension then lower doses are better, around 5 – 10 mg a day. Over 40 mg a day can have the opposite effect and raise eye pressure. We don’t recommend treating any health condition without the supervision of a medical health professional.
Is hemp oil from the supermarket the same as CBD?No, hemp oil is made from hemp seeds and, while it is a great oil high in Omega 3 fatty acids, it does not contain CBD. Like olive oil, it is easily oxidized and goes rancid, and we would not use it for cooking or as a base for our tinctures.
Have you had your products tested?
Yes we have! Our current batch of hemp oil has .5 mg of CBD and .5mg of CBDA per ml and .04 mg/ml of THC. We have added organic CO2 extracted CBD isolate to make 100 mg of CBD per fluid ounce. So you get full spectrum cannabinoids, terpenes and phytochemicals plus enough CBD to make a powerful tincture. Nature did not give us thousands of milligrams of CBD, it gave us a full spectrum of compounds in this plant and we do our best to respect that.
What are you adding to the oil and why?
As exciting as CBD hemp oil is on its own, we wanted to make a new and unique product that could stand on its own even without the CBD, using some of our favorite herbs we love to use for inflammation and mood balance.
We are currently adding CO2 extracted turmeric oil, or turmerene, to our Recovery blend. Turmeric is a very synergistic herb and traditionally is used with black pepper to greatly amplify its absorption.

In the same way, it works with CBD to amplify its health properties. We are very excited about our “Recovery” blend because it has two of the most powerful anti-inflammatories nature has to offer. We also have the “Euphoria” blend, which contains raw cacao, chaga mushroom, and mucuna, a popular herb used to help the brain produce dopamine. It has a delicious, buttery flavor and will make you feel like you’re in love. It’s a great way to start the day.
Are you sure this is legal?
CBD oil made from agricultural hemp that contains less than .3 percent THC is allowable under accordance to the 2014 Farm Bill, Section 7606 and legal within all 50 states.
